Born in Nairobi, Kenya, and today based in Chicago, Mathenge is known for depicting the Black female experience in Africa and the United States. In this personal conversation, Mathenge shares more about her childhood in Kenya, time spent living and working in Sacramento, and how these experiences have influenced her artistic practice.
