Ceramics of Kondō Takahiro and the Kondō Family
Water Born of Earth and Fire: Ceramics of Kondō Takahiro and the Kondō Family presents over 50 ceramic vessels and sculptures made by the Kondō family of potters based in Kyoto, Japan. In addition to ground-breaking works by Takahiro, this exhibition also showcases the innovative creations of two generations of Kondō potters. Kondō Yūzō (1902–1985), founder of the Kondō ceramicist family and Takahiro’s grandfather, was designated a Living National Treasure for his lively blue-and-white porcelains. Kondo Hiroshi (1936–2012), Takahiro’s father, followed in his father Yūzō’s footsteps and made his mark in the field of cobalt-painted porcelain vessels. Kondō Yutaka (1932–1983), Takahiro’s uncle, departed from the family aesthetic and created sculptural stoneware inspired by international ceramics. Throughout his now four-decades-long career, Takahiro has continued the Kondō family’s contribution to the world of ceramics with his unending quest for thought-provoking ceramic expressions.
